  3. First Time Installation
  4. -----------------------

  6.   Please use the appropriate installation icon in the `Install' drawer.
  7.   It  uses  Commodore's Installer utility and will copy all the files in
  8.   the appropriate directories, it will also add some assignments to your
  9.   User-Startup if you allow it.
  10.  
  11.   Since  v1.1  the  installation  of  Mail  Manager  is  much easier, if
  12.   MM_Prefs  ( the configuration editor for Mail Manager ) doesn't find a
  13.   configuration   file,   it   is   able   to  create  a  default  point
  14.   configuration.   Just  run it ( the installation script should do this
  15.   for  you ) and by asking you for a little information it will create a
  16.   default  configuration  with  which you should be immediatelly able to
  17.   run  Mail Manager  as a  'standard'  point.  As soon as you'll be more
  18.   acquainted  with Mail Manager configurations parameters you'll be able
  19.   to customize your configuration as you need.

  23. Upgrading from Mail Manager v1.1

  26.   There are many changes in v1.2, have a look on the History file.

  28.   In  order to upgrade your installation, rename your old "MM" directory
  29.   (  for  example  as  "MM_Old" ) and copy the new "MM" directory in the
  30.   same  place  of  the  old  one.  Then copy all your 'customized' files
  31.   ( MM keyfile,  configuration files, modified Arexx scripts )  from the
  32.   old directory to the new one.

  35.   should  already  have  proper  default  values.

  39. Upgrading from Mail Manager v1.0

  42.   There  are  many  changes in v1.1 and v1.2, have a look on the History
  43.   file.

  45.   In  order to upgrade your installation, rename your old "MM" directory
  46.   (  for  example  as  "MM_Old" ) and copy the new "MM" directory in the
  47.   same  place  of  the  old  one.  Then copy all your 'customized' files
  48.   ( MM keyfile,  configuration files, modified Arexx scripts )  from the

  51.   There  are  also  some  configuration changes.  All the new parameters
  52.   should  already  have  proper  default  values,  but  since  v1.1 I've
  53.   also  completelly  changed  the meaning of the "DeleteBy Date" line of
  54.   the  Areas  parameters:   now  if you configure 'DeleteBy Date <num>',
  55.   during  a  Delete  operation Mail Manager will delete all the messages
  56.   older  than <num> DAYS.  Please note that this is different from v1.0.
  57.   Mail  Manager  v1.0 would keep the last <num> MESSAGES sorted by date.
  58.   If  upgrading  to v1.2, you will need to change this value down to the
  59.   number  of  DAYS  which  is obviously a much smaller number.  In other
  60.   words  a  line  like  "DeleteBy  Date  100"  in v1.0 meant:  'sort the
  61.   messages by date then keep the last 100 messages'; while since v1.1 it
  62.   means:  'keep all the messages not older than 100 days'!
  63.   Please note also that Mail Manager will start to store the import date
  64.   of  a  message  only  since  when  you will install the v1.2.  All the
  65.   messages already present in your message base will receive a 'default'
  66.   import date equal to the first time you have runned Mail Manager v1.2,
  67.   so  if you, for example, have specified "DeleteBy Date 7" for an area,
  68.   you  have to wait at least 7 days from the date of installation before
  69.   Mail Manager will start to delete messages in that area.

  71.   I've  also  changed the format of the message bases, Mail Manager v1.2
  72.   should  automatically upgrade your message base the first time you run
  73.   it.  Please note that this will take a while, DON'T WORRY !!!

  77. Upgrading from Point Manager, Foozle or other *.MSG compatible programs
  78. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  80.   Mail  Manager is able to read standard *.MSG message bases, so you can
  81.   easily  keep  your  old message base.  All you have to do is to follow
  82.   the  same  steps described for the First Time Installation, then, when
  83.   you are inside  MM_Prefs,  configure the same areas you had configured
  84.   in your old program. Obviously the area paths must be the same and the
  85.   message  base  type must be set to 'Indexed'.  Save the configuration,
  86.   run  Mail Manager and, without selecting any area, click on the 'Scan'
  87.   button.   Mail  Manager  will  perform  a global scan ( it will take a
  88.   while  )  and should recognise all your old messages, then, again with
  89.   no  area  selected,  click  on the 'Free' button and Mail Manager will
  90.   write on disk the indexes of the areas.
  91.   Now  if you want modify the *.MSG message base to a better one ( Quick
  92.   or Compressed ) you can do this by selecting all the areas you want to
  93.   modify   and   selecting   the   'Convert   MsgBase'  entry  from  the
  94.   'Miscellaneous' menu.
  95.   Be careful,  if you are  upgrading from  Foozle remember that only the
  96.   CM-Style messagebase of  Foozle  is  fully  compatible  with the Plain
  97.   and Indexed messagebases of Mail Manager.

  100. Upgrading from April, Spot or other programs with custom message bases
  101. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  103.   Mail Manager is not able to directly read such custom message bases.
  104.   Follow  the  same  steps described for the First Time Installation and
  105.   complete the full Mail Manager installation.
  106.   Now,  if you really want to keep your old messages you have to perform
  107.   the  following  steps:   modify the configuration of your old program,
  108.   you  have  to  swap  your  address  and  the address of your boss, for
  109.   example  suppose  that  your address is "2:335/602.2@fidonet" and that
  110.   your  Boss  address  is  "2:335/602.0@fidonet"  you  have to configure
  111.   "2:335/602.0@fidonet"  as  YOUR  address  and "2:335/602.2@fidonet" as
  112.   BOSS address.  Now Export all the messages you want to keep ( you have
  113.   probably  to remove the 'SENT' flag from the messages ),  your program
  114.   will  create  a  (  probably  big  )  bundle,  copy this bundle in the
  115.   configured  Inbound  dir,  run  Mail  Manager  and click on the Import
  116.   button.   If  you  have  properly  configured  everything Mail Manager
  117.   should import all the messages in the right areas.
